Memories are Stories™ started with 'Stir a Memory' a food and memories project. The first 'Stir a Memory' event was an evening of song, poetry, story telling and revelry with foods that audience members brought with them to create a memorable evening in my arts community in Boston! Alongside was a gallery exhibit of Food Memories. That was back in 2008. Since then 'Stir a Memory' has expanded to become a project about sharing and creating new memories in a wide range of settings from museums to schools to open air festivals.
The motivation to start the 'Stir a Memory' project came from my observations of food production and consumption during my doctoral research as well as by my mentor Mary Catherine Bateson's work, particularly the course I assisted Professor Bateson in teaching: Narratives of Learning at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
The positive response to 'Stir a Memory' led to a more formal, expanded arts program. Memories are Stories™ program is designed based on my training in cognitive and behavioral interventions (CBT) and education, my experience in teaching, learning and the arts, and the urgent need for healing and community building.
The power of arts and shared stories motivate me to continue engaging individuals (even children want to share their memories!) and communities across the world.
